Do you know much about the Knights of Columbus? You have probably seen the local Knights of Columbus Color Corp, (their colorful plumes, flowing capes and glistening swords) as honor guard for the Bishop, or with their families at church activities. But where do the Knights of Columbus come from? What do they stand for? What are they all about? The Knights stand for a world of good things. Knights of Columbus programs and projects make a difference in every community and country where they are found.
The Knights of Columbus began in 1882, when Fr. Michael McGivney and a small group of pioneering Catholics founded a society designed to provide much needed security for widows and orphans of Catholic parishioners. The original idea grew quickly, becoming an order of Catholic men and their families, dedicated to promoting the concepts of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism.
Today, in our 125th Anniversary year, the Knights of Columbus is an international Catholic Organization with over 1.7 million members dedicated to working for the Catholic Church, their communities and society at large. The 4 tenets of our order Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism still stand. The challenges are different, but not any less urgent.
Accomplishments of the Bishop Burke council include, Support of Nativity School, through sponsorship and attendance of the Spring Gala, and a further commitment to our youth through a growing spiritual and supportive relationship between the Knights and the Nativity Lifeteen group.
The Feast of the Immaculate Conception was a very special day for the Knights and our Nativity family. The "monument to the unborn" was dedicated to "the victims of abortion" and now stands proudly in front of the Msgr. Beasley Center.
The challenge to become involved has never been greater. The search for solutions has never been more necessary. What are missing are YOU and your family. If you are a practical Catholic man at least 18 years of age, the Knights of Columbus may be just what you have been looking for. You can become as involved as you wish. Just remember that the Knights offer an opportunity for fellowship with people who share the same beliefs, and who recognize the same duty to God, family, to folks down the block and across the sea.
Thank you.
